What is Social Media?

The term social content was recently coined with the rise of social media and generally means anything that someone has posted or shared with others. Content marketing are methods by which businesses or individuals use their social media content to attract and retain customers or followers.

Top Social Media Platforms?

Facebook is the biggest social media site around, with more than two billion people using it every month. That’s almost a third of the world’s population! There are more than 65 million businesses using Facebook Pages and more than six million advertisers actively promoting their business on Facebook, which makes it a pretty safe bet if you want to have a presence on social media.

Instagram is a photo and video sharing social media app. It allows you to share a wide range of content such as photos, videos, Stories, and live videos. It has also recently launched IGTV for longer-form videos. As a brand, you can have an Instagram business profile, which will provide you with rich analytics of your profile and posts and the ability to schedule Instagram posts using third-party tools.

YouTube is a video-sharing platform where users watch a billion hour of videos every day. To get started, you can create a YouTube channel for your brand where you can upload videos for your subscribers to view, like, comment, and share. Besides being the second biggest social media site, YouTube (owned by Google) is also often known as the second largest search engine after Google.

TikTok is a free social media app that lets you watch, create, and share videos — often to a soundtrack of the top hits in music — right from your phone. It was the world’s most downloaded app in the first quarter of 2018, beating Facebook, Instagram, and other social media apps. Users can watch and record videos of themselves lip-synching to popular music and sound bites.

Twitter is a ‘microblogging’ system that allows you to send and receive short posts called tweets. Tweets can be up to 140 characters long and can include links to relevant websites and resources. Twitter users follow other users. If you follow someone you can see their tweets in your twitter ‘timeline’. You can choose to follow people and organizations with similar academic and personal interests to you. You can create your own tweets or you can retweet information that has been tweeted by others. Retweeting means that information can be shared quickly and efficiently with a large number of people.

Can social media help grow my business?

It depends on a number of factors, the most important of which is your business type, your budget, your target audience etc,. Without an adequate budget chances are you will be the only one seeing your content, along with maybe a few of your friends and family. To reach out to a larger audience you will have to run paid campaigns, which are becoming increasingly competitive due to increase competition for ad space on these platforms.

Even with an adequate budget you will only see results if you have a carefully  defined strategy that includes:

  1. Your Target Audience
  2. A Clear Set of Goals
  3. Engaging content
  4. Irresistible offers
  5. Excellent customer response
